Pair of candle-holding angels
(2) Lacquered and gilded wood, H 70 cm
Pair of sculptures, in finely carved, lacquered and gilded wood, made in the Lombardy area in the early 18th century, depicting a pair of candle-holding angels. The two figures hold, mirror-like, a large carved and gilded cornucopia, which, with a sinuous movement, encircles their hips. Such cornucopias once held candles for lighting rooms. The angels are portrayed with soft wavy hair falling on their shoulders, wings and golden clothes, which open in soft flutters and drapes. Their bare feet rest on golden bases, carved on the front in double angular scrolls, decorated in the center by a cherub's head within an oval medallion. The sculptures, designed to be enjoyed from a frontal view, have another decorative value, both in a context of antique furniture and in a contamination with a contemporary environment.
