Jean-Baptiste Louis Guy is the son of Joseph Emmanuel Guy, army captain at the birth of his son then watchmaker in Lyon, and of Marie Élisabeth Honorine Caroline Reffay.
A student of Claude Bonnefond and Antoine Duclaux at the Palais Saint-Pierre in the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, he exhibited in Lyon from 1840 and at the Paris Salon in 1868.
He produced for the Antiquaille hospital in Lyon, a scientific album composed of 99 plates, in wash and watercolor, reproducing the special diseases treated in this hospital.
His paintings are painted or drawn on very varied subjects such as portraits, landscapes or still lifes, but also animals.
