"A Crucifix."
A bronze altar crucifix in the Gothic Revival style. Its base is decorated with cabochons in imitation of ruby and amethyst. The base is supported by the feet in shape of lion. The four lions supporting the crucifix symbolize (in the Middle Ages) many magical powers of the Christ and his divine nature. The patibulum (transverse part of the cross) is also decorated with cabochons in imitation of amethyst.
The crucifix is part of the beautiful manufacturing of Gothic Revival style carried out under Napoleon III.
The cabochons and the lions are the typical ornamentation of the Middle Ages style.
