Note: Jacques Cartier, (he was born in 1491 in Saint-Malo - at the time part of the Duchy of Brittany - and died in 1557), is a Breton then French navigator and explorer. He discovered Canada during the expedition on behalf of François 1er in 1534: looking for a passage to China, passing through the north of America, he discovered Newfoundland and the bay of the Saint-Laurent River, located in the current province of Quebec. The discovery of the Bay of Saint Lawrence marks the beginning of the exploration of the North American continent by the French, and announces the wars between the English and the French for the conquest of North America.
