In 1768-1770, he spent time in Paris, where he frequented the studio of the German engraver JG Wille. In 1771, back in his hometown, he was appointed cabinet painter. His successes did not encourage him to travel to Italy, following the example of his brother Franz (1749-1822), but he seems to have shared his experience with him. His son Wilhelm (1766-1853), who would become court painter in Munich, collaborated with him on the Aschaffenburg cycle commissioned by the Elector of Mainz, his major work. 32 x 22 without frame 35 x 45 total
