A kago is a type of Japanese sedan chair, forming a woven bamboo lodge, carried by two men using a single pole. The Hakone road is part of the ancient Tokaido road, "sea road" built in the 17th century along the Pacific. Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934) was a colorist and assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimond Von Stillfried before opening his own studio in Yokohama in 1881. Around 1885, he bought the negatives of Beato and Stillfried. Kimbei immortalized, at the end of the 19th century, many portraits of Japanese people. The prints, which he colored by hand, were then sold to tourists visiting the country. - Photo format 20.5 x 26.5 cm - Under mat 40x50cm
