The Designer: Willy Daro's sculptural creations are true works of art. The designer is known for his Hollywood Regency-style lighting fixtures, including a range of elegant table lamps, wall sconces and ceiling lamps. Collectors are also turning to vintage Willy Daro coffee tables, with their provocative and sinuous bases in brass or travertine, these pieces exude sophistication in any modern space. Daros established his design studio after World War II. In the early 1960s, he opened Les Nouveaux Ateliers Willy Daro in Brussels, where he produced furniture for almost three decades, until the workshop closed in 1987. Many of Daro's most famous designs were created in the 1970s, when he became noted for his innovative use of natural materials. Daro's bold furniture featured an improbable fusion of brass, minerals, fossils, coral, shells and stones. Its tables also draw inspiration from the natural world – bonsai-shaped metal bases are topped with thick glass surfaces that allow a view of the sculptural forms beneath. Today, Daros pieces remain highly sought after and fetch considerable prices at auction.
