"Hubertus Van Hove - The Artist At The Client's (rembrandt?)"
Hubertus VAN HOVE The Hague, 1814 - Antwerp, 1865 Oil on wood panel Signed and dated lower left "HV HOVE / 1840" 62.5 x 46.5 cm (70 x 56 cm with frame) Hubertus van Hove from The Hague was a painter of the Romantic period who specialized in interior views. His father was the Hague painter Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove (1790-1880), who influenced many view painters such as Bosboom. In his "doorkijkjes" the beautiful colors and bright light are remarkable with an exterior light seen through an interior, a room or a kitchen for example. His transparent interiors with a beautiful sunlight effect are reminiscent of the art of Pieter de Hooch. In this painting depicting an artist with his drawing board stopping at the bottom of the stairs of a large bourgeois house, we think we recognize the young Rembrandt who began with drawing and engraving in his early days in Amsterdam.
