"Large Oil On Canvas Breton Genre Scene "
Very beautiful and large canvas entirely cleaned representing a famous painting by Emma Herland the "lunch of little Potik" the original painting is in the Museum of Fine Arts of Morlaix since its creation in 1887. It influenced many Breton painters including our author who made this painting 20 years after the original in 1907. Our artist signed with his initials RF. Very pretty little scene of Breton interior life. The big sister feeding her little brother, the little potic, under the gaze of their mother. The child's game made in a clog is a detail that we like very much. Pretty wooden frame, sober. Emma Herland is a French artist born in 1855 in Cherbourg. She discovered Brittany when her father, a pharmacist of the navy, was transferred to Brest. A student of masters with a very academic style such as Fisher, Constant or Lefebvre, it was quite natural that she continued on this path. Her artistic qualities were remarkable and she very quickly began to make a living from her painting. Single, she supported her sister, her four brothers and later her nephew. The war of 1914 shook up academicism, but Emma Herland continued to cultivate a realistic style that paid homage to women, Breton traditions, peasant interiors and celebration. Around 1920, she left Concarneau for Quimper where she bought a house. It was there that she died in 1947. Indifferent to the avant-garde, Emma Herland's style did not evolve. But her works are imbued with a beautiful light, centered on the life of Breton peasants and restore to us a bygone era in all its simplicity and tranquility. Real little gems.
