The colors are delicate and bathe the scene in a calm atmosphere of the end of the day.
The work is in very good condition, we note some discreet foxing in the sky. It is signed lower right.
The work is placed under glass, in a gray mat, in a sober modern gilded frame, also in very good condition.
The artist
Étienne Adolphe d'Hastrel de Rivedoux - better known as Adolphe d'Hastrel - was a French naval artillery captain, painter, watercolourist and lithographer, born on 4 October 1805 in Neuwiller-lès-Saverne, in the Bas-Rhin, and died on 1 July 1874 in Nantes, in the Loire-Atlantique. He embraced a military career at the age of 20, in order to reconcile his desire to travel and his passion for drawing.
For around twenty years he travelled the world and took advantage of his military missions to draw and paint landscapes, scenes of daily life, human types and costumes. In particular, he immortalised the Ile Bourbon (Réunion Island), Senegal and several South American countries. He also produced views of several French cities, including La Rochelle and Les Sables d'Olonne, where he lived.
In fragile health, he was discharged in 1847. He then devoted himself entirely to drawing.
The Quai Branly Museum in Paris, the Nantes Art Museum, and several museums on Reunion Island hold works by Adolphe d'Hastrel. Some have also been sold to the public, but few are available on the market.
