A student of James Pradier, Francisque Duret and Léon Cogniet at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he entered in 1849, he successively won, in 1851, the second grand prize in medal and fine stone engraving, in 1853, the second grand prize for sculpture and, in 1855, jointly with Amédée Doublemard, the first grand prize for sculpture, also called the Prix de Rome. In 1861, the last year of his stay in Rome, he sent a Mercury inventing the caduceus. Back in Paris, he settled on Boulevard de Magenta. His production, very abundant, was often inspired by antiquity. He received many honors and distinctions, and became one of the most sought-after sculptors of the Third Republic. Henri Chapu's marble representing Joan of Arc in Domrémy, revealed him to the general public. This work reveals his talent for rendering subtle and accurate expressions and feelings in an ideal envelope. He was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor the same year. France in the 19th century was fascinated by the figure of Joan of Arc, a historical and mythologized heroine who participated in the strong nationalist movement, willingly anti-British.
