"Louis XV Style Three-light Candelabra, France, Late 19th Century, Gilded And Patinated"

This is a stunning pair of French Louis XV style gilt and patinated Three-light candelabra from the late 19th century, a remarkable work by the sculptor Rozet. These exquisite pieces were cast by the esteemed foundry Thiébaut Frères, Fumière et Gavignot Successeurs, based in Paris. Richly detailed and masterfully executed, they represent the height of 19th-century French decorative arts.
Description:
Each candelabrum presents a unique figural composition, illustrating playful and romantic themes typical of the Louis XV aesthetic: Figures:
  • One features a seated girl, delicately holding floral garlands, embodying grace and femininity.
  • The other showcases a young boy sitting on a tree stump, lending an air of charm and vitality.
  • Candle Arms:
  • Both candelabra are adorned with three scrolling foliate branches, expertly cast and designed to resemble organic vines.
  • Each arm terminates in intricately detailed foliate candleholders and drip-pans.
  • Base:
  • The bases are crafted with scrolling acanthus motifs, echoing the flowing elegance of Rococo design.
  • The gilt and patinated finishes create a striking contrast, highlighting the intricate details.
  • Signature and Inscriptions:
  • Each piece is signed “Rozet” and inscribed on the base with “Thiébaut Frères / Fumière & Gavignot Srs. Paris,” verifying their authenticity and provenance.

  • Dimensions:
  • Width: 29 cm (11.5 inches)
  • Depth: 29 cm (11.5 inches)
  • Height: 53 cm (20.5 inches)
  • Historical Significance:
The candelabra were produced by Thiébaut Frères, a prestigious foundry founded by Henri-Léon Thiébaut (c. 1846–1899). Known for their mastery of lost-wax bronze casting, the foundry achieved international recognition, winning Grand Prix medals at the 1878 and 1889 Paris International Exhibitions.
Charles Fumière and André Gavignot later joined the foundry, establishing the name "Thiébaut Frères, Fumière et Gavignot Successeurs." Their collaborative expertise ensured the continuation of the foundry's celebrated tradition of excellence.
    Provenance:
  • Auctioned at Bonhams, Bond Street, London, during the Fine European Furniture, Sculpture, and Works of Art sale on July 5, 2012.
  • Estimated Value: £8,000–£12,000 GBP.
  • Condition:
  • Gilt and Patina: In excellent condition, with a rich patina that enhances the intricate details.

This exceptional pair combines timeless elegance, historical significance, and masterful artistry, making them a centerpiece for any fine art collection or a luxurious addition to a sophisticated interior.
    Additional Notes:
These candelabra not only serve as functional lighting but also as works of art, embodying the opulence and craftsmanship of the French Belle Époque. Their detailed design and impeccable provenance make them a rare find for discerning collectors.
