Object description :

"Prussian Other Ranks Spiked Helmet Of The 60th Infantry Regiment “markgraf Karl“ "
Prussian Troop Spiked Helmet of the 60th Infantry Regiment “markgraf Karl“ (7th Brandenburgisches), stamped, IR 60, 1898, III, 2 C, I, size 56, missing the headdress. The Infantry Regiment "Markgraf Karl" (7th Brandenburg Regiment)

No. 60 was an infantry unit of the Prussian Army. The regiment was formed in 1860 in Brandenburg and transferred to Alsace in 1871. The most important garrison location was Weissenburg. During its existence, the regiment took part in all major wars of Prussia and the German Empire, i.e. the three wars of unification from 1864 to 1871 and the First World War from 1914 to 1918. At the end of the war, the regiment was disbanded in 1919. The name of the regiment was given to Margrave Karl, who had distinguished himself as a regimental leader and commander under Frederick the Great.

First World War (1914–1918)
The regiment was mobilized in 1914 at the beginning of the First World War and fought until the end of the war in the strength of the 31st Division, initially on the Western Front. In January 1915, the regiment was transferred with the 31st Division to the Eastern Front. After the October Revolution and the armistice in the East in December 1917, the regiment was again transferred to the Western Front to take part in the initially successful but heavily lost Spring Offensive of 1918. (See combat calendar) After the armistice of 11 November 1918, the regiment did not return to its original garrison in Weissenburg, as Alsace was now part of France. Instead, demobilisation took place in Staßfurt, where the regiment was disbanded in January 1919. During the First World War, the regiment lost 173 officers and non-commissioned officers. From its creation in 1860 until 1871, the regiment belonged to the 11th Infantry Brigade with headquarters in Berlin, this to the 6th Division (Brandenburg an der Havel), and thus to the III Army Corps, (Berlin). With the transfer to Alsace-Lorraine, the regiment was attached in 1871 to the 59th Infantry Brigade (headquarters in Metz), which belonged to the 30th Division (also Metz) and thus to the XV Army Corps (Strasbourg). After a regrouping, the regiment was part of the 62nd Infantry Brigade and the 31st Division from 1884. This division was part of the XV Army Corps until 1912, then of the XXI Army Corps. At the outbreak of war in 1914, the regiment entered the campaign with this strength, with the XXI Army Corps subordinate to the 6th Army. In the autumn of 1916, the regiment left the 31st Infantry Division to join the 218th Infantry Division, which had been re-formed on the Eastern Front.
