Exceptional specimen of free-form malachite on foot. Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. It is often found in nature with the related azurite. Malachite was worked as a gemstone very early on. In ancient Egypt, it was made into cameos, amulets, and ornaments. The Greeks and Romans of classical antiquity were familiar with malachite. The pulverized mineral was used as makeup and as a dye for paint.
