The faces, with beard collars, shaggy hair and a jovial smile, evoke the grotesque characters of Bacchic mythology. Is it the face of Silenus and one of his companions, both drunk, participating in a bacchanal?
These masks come from the Belgian manufacturer Boch Frères Keramis, founded in 1844, one of them bears the enigmatic signature GDG.
The Boch Frères Keramis factory, founded in 1844 in La Louvière by brothers Joseph and Felix Boch, is a Belgian company renowned for its quality ceramics. From its beginnings, it distinguished itself by the use of high quality local clay and diversified into the production of earthenware, porcelain and decorative objects.
In the 19th century, the company experienced strong development, exporting internationally. After the Second World War, competition and market developments weakened the company, which reinvented itself by producing more modern ceramics under the name Keramis.
Production ceased in 1981, but the brand's heritage is preserved thanks to the Keramis Museum, opened in 2002 in La Louvière, which preserves the history and creations of the manufacture. Boch Frères Keramis remains a symbol of the excellence of Belgian ceramics.
