"Perspective Of The City Of Saint Denis Par Merian"
Beautiful 17th century engraving representing the city of Saint Denis in perspective, by Merian. The Merian dynasty, inaugurated by Matthias Merian (1593-1650), trained by Jacques Callot, a citizen of Frankfurt, crossed the 17th century by illustrating with talent important books, the Bible for example, and by traveling, and often in France, making the precise survey of the cities of the time. Of course this vision of the city of the royal basilica, surrounded by fields, forest of bell towers, is very destabilizing for a man of the 21st century, it was nevertheless very real, this is what makes the charm of this period document. The site of the town hall of Saint Denis gives it to Caspar Merian, a son, working in the family workshop. Good modern frame, the engraving must have been cleaned because it is very fresh.
