Biography In 1834, Alphonse Colas enrolled at the academic school of drawing in Lille. When the Lille school of painting was created in 1838, he was a student of François Souchon. In 1842, his Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence allowed him to receive a scholarship to go to Rome (Wicar workshop). From 1843 to 1848, he traveled to Italy where he studied the great masters of the Renaissance. In 1856, Colas became a full professor of painting in Lille. Among the greatest religious painters of his time, he carried out numerous commissions for churches in his region. The city of Lille named one of its streets after him.
