Chiseled bronze, gilded, Campan grey-green marble.
This important pair of potpourris is based on the original model by Pierre Gouthière (1732,1813), therefore the one modeled after the famous "perfume furnace" of the Duke of Aumont now kept at the Wallace Collection in London (in red jasper). It was bought by Marie Antoinette in 1782. Pierre Gouthière, one of the greatest makers under Louis XVI and in absolute terms, created wonders, became famous and ended up in poverty despite everything. Our potpourris are in Athenian.
The base has three pairs of small twinned feet in twists, a round marble plaque supporting the three large feet and a small cluster of bays in its center. The three supports are hollowed out with friezes, surrounded at the lower part by a curved and openwork belt. These racks widen into volutes and mascarons of fauns and are tied with large garlands of flowers. A snake between the feet is in a spiral with its head down, mouth open as if to eat the berries, like the original model described above, later potpourris will be made with the snake with its head up. Under the marble basin a frieze of flowers and leaves is in a rosette centered on a hanging bay.
The marble basin is in the shape of a crater with wide grooves. The neck is decorated with an openwork gallery which gives them their name of potpourris. These beautiful objects are served by a deep and firm chiseling and the beautiful green Campan marble (but difficult to render in a photo, where it appears grayed). We will note inventory numbers struck under the bottom.
The design therefore the model having pleased, these potpourris were remade in the 19th century with certain differences and gaps (feet, details of the garlands ...). Ours reproduce in extenso the model acquired by the Martyred Queen, which is not the case for most of the few other reproductions of the 19th century and are therefore rare. Condition: Almost perfect condition, shiny gilding. Dimensions: Height: 50 cm, base diameter: 15 cm, basin width: 23 cm.
