"Jiva The Basque Country Towards Ascain. Oil On Panel 21 X 14cm"
Very beautiful painting by Robert William Jivanovitch known as Jiva, representing a Basque house near Ascain. Oil on panel, signed Jiva lower right. Dimensions: 21 X 14 cm excluding original frame. For the record, the painter, Jiva (1907-1974) was a designer, illustrator, caricaturist and painter of Russian origin. He was active around the middle of the 20th century, mainly in Biarritz, where many of his compatriots were found, then after the Russian revolution of 1917. He was more than ignored by the people of Biarritz during his years of activity. Tourists made up the majority of his clientele, especially Belgians. Jiva is the only one to have painted the crampons (shelters) of the fishermen's port and the unpolluted waves of the Atlantic Ocean. He loved Biarritz and the Basque Country without any ulterior motive. Jiva then devoted himself to painting Basque landscapes, scenes of life and portraits. His work can be admired at the Basque Museum in Bayonne, which has several of his works. Jiva died in 1974 in Biarritz.
