These miniature representations were often the testimony of a sailor who wanted to show his entourage the ships on which he had sailed. They were made either during their hours of rest, or on land after disembarking for a well-deserved retirement or while waiting for a next embarkation. Lighthouse keepers also had the habit of making boats in bottles, or in used light bulbs from the lighthouse. Boats in bottles are made by navibotellists - more simply called botellists. The latter stage boats in a maritime environment and many other subjects - even without boats - but always inside a glass container with a narrow opening.
