The fashion for portraits of animals in costume took off in Europe in the 18th century and continued until the 19th century. These paintings were popular with aristocrats and bourgeois who had their favorite animals painted in the most frivolous and extravagant clothes. Our little dog is wearing a very sensible dress and holding a book. This oil on canvas dated, bottom left, 1893, bears a monogram, which can be found as well as the date on the back of the painting.
