Object description :

"Georgian Repoussé Silver Fruit Bowl With Flying Dog Handles, 1812, 602g"
Impressive George III large sterling silver fruit dish. Lobed round body divided into 6 panelled sections and resting on a spreading circular foot. The bowl has two figural handles modelled as winged dogs / gargoyles. The centre of the bowl has a wonderfully ornate repoussage of pear, apples, grapes and other fruit; the panels are engraved and embossed with scrolls, foliage and various blooming flowers.

There are 2 vacant shield cartouches, so this bowl can be engraved and personalised as a present.

The maker's mark is very rubbed, but under a magnifying glass a partial "IWW" is visible, for J W Story and W Elliott.

The shape and design of this bowl is reminiscent of Dutch brandy bowls that were popular in the 17th century.

Made by J W Story & W Elliot and fully assayed for London, 1812

602 g / 19.4 t oz
7.3 cm tall to rim
8.5 cm tall to handle
20.5 x 20 cm across the top
26 cm handle to handle
12 cm base diameter

Excellent antique condition. Some tiny nicks and dings appropriate to age; maker's mark rubbed; seam visible on the inside of the foot; tiny split to foot; tiny crack to rim that has been soldered over.
