"Louis Léon Desjardins (1823-1914) Washerwomen On The Moor, Creuse. Crozant School, Guêret"
New work by Louis Léon Desjardins an oil/canvas mounted on thin cardboard representing washerwomen near a pond in a Creuse moor, signed with the studio stamp monogram at the bottom left. Size of the painting alone without frame 18x28cm and 42.5x52cm including frame This is therefore a very beautiful 19th century composition by Louis Léon Desjardins, quite original because he paints washerwomen near a pond in a birch moor, most likely in the vicinity of Guéret. As much as the subject is original, his touch is very characteristic, just like his very subtle palette where a few spots of red, white or blue are enhanced by browns, greens and blue/grey. Desjardins is one of the pioneer painters of the Crozant school, as well as the best painters of the mid-19th century, Desjardins does not have to be ashamed of his much better known colleagues who painted at the same time and in the same area, such as Théodore Rousseau, the Dupré brothers, Cagnat, Castan, Le Gentile etc... Like them he is attached to the schools of Fay and Crozant (see catalog on these schools). Born in Guéret, he is therefore one of the local painters alongside Veillat, Le Gentile, Desjobert (see work for sale), Perret, Roger etc. Louis Léon Desjardins was born on March 7, 1823 in Amiens and died on January 25, 1914 in Guéret. He is the son of Louis Jean Baptiste, merchant clerk, and Marie Jeanne Sophie Deheilly. A student of Horace Vernet, he exhibited at the Salon from 1857 to 1875. In 1847, he moved to Guéret where he married Marie Caffin in 1854. He died at his home in Guéret, at the age of 90. This oil on canvas, mounted on cardboard a very long time ago, is in very good condition for its 150 years, delivered in an old frame with a velvet mat. Work guaranteed authentic
