"Painting On Leather Panel Early 17th Century "
Rare oil painting on leather panel depicting the ascension of Christ after the resurrection. The leather panel is worked by stamping and embossing in the style of Malines leathers in Flanders. The resurrected Christ ascends into the sky in front of three armed soldiers. This very old painting, late 16th century, early 17th century, is of high quality. The leather support is particularly rare for a painting of this type. The embossing work is very fine and complex. The condition is good despite its age. No gaps or repainting. Folds, some wear that can be restored but for me, its "natural" state reinforces its charm and presence. The leather is stretched over a very old wooden panel. This old assembly is probably original. Height of the oval: 49cm Width: 38cm A beautiful old painting on an unusual support, a beautiful and old curiosity. The photos do not flatter it and accentuate the few defects of the leather.
