"Gilded Bronze Buddha, Mandalay Period"
Antique Burmese image of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, in bronze, refined gilding mixed with red bowl as well as vestige of mica on the edge of his face. Mandalay period around 1860. This posture of Buddha seated with hands in bhumisparsha mudra, symbolizes the moment when Shakyamuni reaches enlightenment while meditating under the Bodhi tree, he touches the earth to call the goddess Bhumi to testify of his victory over Mara, demon of obstacles, who tries to prevent his awakening by temptation, fear and desire.
