Pair Of Bronzes, Grand Tour Sculptures, Two Furietti Centaurs

Pair of brown patina bronzes representing Furietti's centaurs. They are presented on plated wooden bases. A must for travellers on the Grand Tour in the 19th century.

^{The Centaurs are ancient sculptures in black marble discovered in 1736 by Monsignor Furietti in the Villa Adriana in Tivoli (a villa built in the 2nd century by the Emperor Hadrian). Also known as the Old Centaur and the Young Centaur, these sculptures are a metaphor for the torments of age. They became indispensable thanks to the many bronze reproductions made from the 18th century onwards, and especially in the 19th century for travellers on the Grand Tour. The Furietti Centaurs can also be found in many gardens and palaces (a white marble replica can be found in the gardens of the Grand Trianon, and a bronze pair at the entrance to the Château de Malmaison).
Cardinal Furietti, a keen archaeologist, kept these sculptures until his death in 1764. On his death, his heirs sold them and they were transferred to the Capitoline Museums in Rome under the name of ‘Furietti's Centaurs’ in homage to their discoverer, and became an emblem of Greek and Roman Antiquity.}

Condition: bronzes in very good condition. Bases: missing veneers in places.
