Beautiful old painting from the 19th century, oil on canvas signed lower left "Jacques Pillard Rome 1888" and countersigned on the back on the frame, representing a virgin and child in a cloud. Very beautiful neoclassical style for this renowned Lyon painter, admirer of Ingres, having spent most of his life in Rome (via Vicolo Paganica) where he had his studio. Devout and anti-revolutionary painter, he exhibited at the salon from 1840, and mainly produced religious paintings, history and landscapes of the Roman countryside. Abbot Claude Bouvier wrote a book about his life and mentioned our painting in his inventory after death.
