"Portrait Of A Woman By Jean Benner, Pastel"
Born in Mulhouse, twin brother of Emmanuel Benner (1836-1896), his family moved to Paris when he was 6 years old, his father took him to draw at the Louvre. His parents died suddenly in 1849, he returned to Mulhouse and took drawing classes at the Société Industrielle de Mulhouse. A flower painter, he collaborated with the Steinbach & Koechlin studio, returned to Paris in 1821, a student of Bonnat and Hebert, was joined by his brother, they left in 1865 on a long study trip to Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples and Capri, got married in this city where his son Emmanuel was born, who also became an artist and who signed Many Benner. Present many times at the Salon from 1857, his works are kept in the museums of Basel, Belfort, Bern, Colmar Unterlinden Museum, Mulhouse Museum of Fine Arts, Nantes, Strasbourg Museum of Fine Arts, Paris Museum of Luxembourg. Our work, rectangular in format, was mounted in a frame with an oval window. The signature: Benner is hidden by the edge of the oval.
