The artist
Eugène de Barberiis was born in 1851 in Marseille. He is an important painter from the south of France. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille and was friends with Jules Cantini, Jean-Baptiste Olive, Edouard Crémieux… He lived between Marseille and Paris.
The painting we are offering here was probably made in the Paris region at the end of the 19th century, before Barberiis devoted himself exclusively to Provençal painting.
Eugene de Barberiis died in 1937, in Sanary sur Mer in the Var.
Several works by Barberiis are kept in the museums of Marseille.
