He painted mainly portraits and allegorical and mythological subjects which he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris almost every year between 1863 and 1882. In 1865 he founded the artistic and literary circle of rue Volney. At the 1867 salon, the famous art critic Louis Auvray wrote about him: “Mr. Tillier is a colorist as we like them; its color has warmth; transparency; nothing heavy, nothing thick; it is the blood that circulates under the epidemic, it is the light with its golden rays and its thousand reflections.
