Blais studied (1974-79) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. In 1981, he participated in the exhibition organized by Bernard Lamarche-Vadel ("Finish in beauty") which would be the birth of the Free Figuration movement. The paintings, engravings and drawings of Jean-Charles Blais are now internationally recognized. His first solo exhibition was organized in 1982 and his works were successively exhibited in France (Bordeaux, Paris, etc.) and abroad (Rome, Amsterdam, London, Basel, New York, etc.). At the beginning of the 80s, the artist most often painted on the backs of posters recovered from the street or the metro; his canvases were then populated with characters enlarged to the monumental. Blais' painting then hides neither the filiations nor the traditions in which it is inscribed. Very quickly, Blais changes his style, the characters becoming sketched, mysterious, "simple" silhouettes from behind, strange and sensual shadows, faces in black shadow, of which we will never know anything. "I paint figures that are no longer characters, but objects," he declares. Jean-Charles Blais will respond to the public commission with the language of public space for the metro station "Assemblée Nationale". He took up sculpture in the 90s and at the same time resumed his painting on posters. Blais multiplied his experiments. In the early 2000s, he created digital paintings.
