"Pair Of Large Porcelain Onion Boxes Paris Period 19th Century Dated August 1853 Etoges"
Rare pair of large porcelain onion boxes with polychrome decoration of birds in countryside landscapes, and gilded highlights, the side handles in the shape of a stylized lion's head. The box includes two compartments accommodating two removable shelves each receiving four onions, i.e. eight onions per box. The pediment decorated with a shell and volutes. One box is in perfect condition. The second has been restored on its back with scattered chips. They are marked below BG Etoges and dated August 1853 (Château d Etoges?). Provenance: Gironde castle, Tour d'Auvergne family. Work from the Napoleon III period, 19th century.
