"Louis Legrand Paris 1900"
Pen drawing depicting a nighttime funfair scene. A horse on the left and the coachman warming his hands around a luminous ball, in the back women dressed as in Seurat's paintings stroll in front of funfair stands. The pen technique allows him to render the effects of artificial light as a worthy student of Felicien Rops. The drawing is signed lower right and dated 84. It is framed in a 19th century fruitwood frame. Louis Legrand (1863-1951) studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, then in Paris, from 1884, aquatint with Félicien Rops. His career as a press illustrator was quickly crowned by a prison sentence for obscenity. He nevertheless continued to work in the field of engraving, dealing with subjects such as dance, less sensitive at the time.
