Descendant of a Briançonnaise Family who in the 17th century, added to their name that of an estate called Latour, Jean-Théodore Fantin Latour is known as a portrait painter and pastellist. He began his career in Grenoble where he lived until 1841, the date of his establishment in Paris in the district of Saint Germain-des-Prés. He exhibited at the Salon from 1842 to 1866. From his union with Hélène de Naidenoff, adopted daughter of a Russian countess, three children were born, Henri, Marie and Nathalie. Henri, famous painter of still lifes, portraits and fantasy figures, received his first drawing lessons from his father and made a pencil portrait of the latter around 1860, currently kept at the Musée de Grenoble.
