Marie-Auguste FLAMENG (Metz 1843 – 1893 Paris) Ships in port Signed lower left Oil on mahogany panel, 46 x 55 cm THE ARTIST Painter of landscapes and seascapes, Marie-Auguste Flameng was born in Metz on July 14, 1843. He was a student of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. He made his debut at the Salon des artistes français in 1870 with his painting entitled Village de Lorraine. He then exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français where he won prizes, including a medal in 1881. His landscapes and seascapes, painted in Calvados and Brittany, are particularly appreciated. But we also know of his views of Loiret and views of Paris. His works are cited: Loading oysters at Cancale, 1888, oil on canvas, Toul Museum of Art and History, Village alley, oil on canvas, Ursuline Museum of Mâcon, Fishing boat at Dieppe, oil on canvas, Rennes Museum of Fine Arts, Fishing boats at Cancale, oil on canvas, Pau Museum of Fine Arts, Fishing boat towing a canoe, drawing, Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre. He regularly sent works to the Salon de Nancy, landscapes and seascapes. He died in Paris in 1893.
