Born in 1887 in Langres, in eastern France, Jules-René HERVÉ moved to Paris in 1908 to study at the School of Decorative Arts. He had his first exhibition in 1910 at the Salon des Artistes Français. He was a pupil of Fernand Cormon. He then taught other artists from 1911 to 1943. He won numerous medals (gold medal for French artists in 1925 - gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1937...)
