HISTORY: JAN VAN STOLK was a Dutch ceramicist.
He was born in the Canary Islands and then lived with his parents (also ceramicists) in Italy and Greece.
In the 1930s, he returned to the Netherlands.
During the Second World War, he studied at the Arnhem Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of Gijs Jacobs van den Hof. In 1946, Van Stolk opened his own workshops in Nijmegen, and from 1953 in Oosterbeek. Until 1970.
In Van Stolk's early work, the Mediterranean atmosphere is recognizable. Later, he worked with engraved decorations, often on a black background. Since the 1960s, he has also made ceramic sculptures.
