Historical context: Jean-Baptiste Massillon (1663-1742) is a prominent figure in the Catholic Church and a renowned orator, often cited among the greatest preachers in the history of France. Born on June 24, 1663 in Hyères (Var) into a modest family, he showed exceptional aptitude for studies from a young age. At the age of 18, he joined the Congregation of the Oratory of Jesus, a religious order known for its educational mission and intellectual commitment. Massillon quickly distinguished himself by his oratorical talents and his deep knowledge of Scripture and theology. Unlike his contemporaries, he rejected rhetorical artifices and focused on simple, direct, and deeply emotional expression. In 1696, he was sent to Paris, where he became famous for his sermons in prestigious churches, notably the Oratory of Paris and the Royal Chapel of Versailles. His homilies, marked by their spiritual depth, deeply touched the faithful, including Louis XIV. In 1715, he delivered the funeral oration of the Sun King, beginning his speech with the famous words: "God alone is great." These words had a lasting impact and embodied Christian humility in the face of the grandiose image of the king. In 1717, Massillon was appointed Bishop of Clermont (Auvergne). He distinguished himself by his simplicity, his pastoral dedication, and his efforts to improve the living conditions of the faithful. Opposed to all forms of fanaticism, he advocated a gentle and compassionate faith. His sermons, published under the title “Sermons de Massillon,” include the famous “Petit Carême,” a series of sermons delivered at the court of the young Louis XV. Massillon died on September 28, 1742 in Clermont, leaving a reputation as an unrivaled orator and a man of sincere faith. His sermons continue to be studied as models of religious eloquence. His phrase “God alone is great” remains a timeless lesson in humility and faith.
