Joseph-Victor Communal (1876-1962) - Oil on wood - View of the Gastaldi refuge (Italy) Oil on wood depicting snow-capped mountains near the Gastaldi refuge in Italy (located at 2,659 meters above the Crot del Ciaussinè) Signed on the back Dating from 1947 Joseph-Victor Communal is a French painter, member of the Society of Mountain Painters (SPM). In 1910 he exhibited in Paris at the Salon de l'école française, then he exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français. His first major solo exhibition took place in Paris in 1912, at the Georges Petit gallery. He painted with a knife, in large flat areas, perfectly depicting mountain reliefs and sometimes revealing the underlying support (most often a wooden panel). He painted both alpine landscapes where the mountain appears in the background, as well as tighter views of the high mountains, but also pastoral scenes or floral compositions. Visible at the Courcelles Antiquités Gallery, at 97 rue de Courcelles, in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
