PITCHER with a pewter shoulder, flared foot, straight oblique cup and acorn thumb.
Incompletely legible control mark: crowned C / 172(-) / (V)ITRE. (This is the one from 1729, the last vintage listed, which was used until the revolutionary period)
Incomplete mark of Pierre RAOULT received master around 1750: Saint-Pierre / rooster / 1777 / (PIERRE RAOULT A VITRAY).
The last cliché shows this more legible mark previously found on another piece.
Height: 27.9 cm.
VITRé (Brittany), End of the 18th century

Very rare provenance in a very beautiful condition of freshness and superb quality of material; sixth example encountered during nearly 50 years of intensive "frequentation" of pewter...
Property mark engraved on the handle: CI / CHA / CI / ROYER.
Paradoxically, while Brittany had tin mines, the tin industry was very small in its eastern part and almost non-existent in the rest of the region. Bibliography:
"Les pichets d'étain" by Charles Boucaud
"La poterie d'étain en France" by Roger Verdier
