Object description :

"Great Altarpiece Of The Venetian School Of The 17th Century"
COD 0945
Great altarpiece from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a splendid Madonna and Child adored by Saint Jerome and Saint Anthony of Padua. A painting of remarkable pictorial quality, particularly notable for the executive technique for the draperies and the chromatic brilliance of the tonal painting of the Venetian school. High up on the clouds we see the Virgin and baby Jesus with two splendid little angels, one with a tambourine and the other with flowers. Below appear Saint Jerome and Saint Anthony of Padua: the first can be recognized by his red robe and some symbols such as the lion, the book and a stone in his hand used to do penance by beating his chest. The second in Franciscan robes points to a stem of lilies, his specific iconographic symbol. Painting attributable to the Venetian painter Francesco Pittoni (1645-1724) based on documentation by Emilio Negro. He worked mainly in the north of Italy but above all in Venice and his style opened up early to the innovations of the Rococo thus influencing his nephew Giovanni Battista Pittoni. Painting of monumental dimensions, ideal for a large hall or private chapel. Large 19th century frame in carved and gilded wood, with some drops of gilding (see photo). Arched canvas already restored with re-lining, replacement of the frame and re-colouring in small spots. Painting overall in good state of conservation. Interior size H 219 x W 118 cm
