Large and exceptional cult figure similar to the so-called "Yena" figures. Collected in the Upper Sepik area in Papua New Guinea (Nokuma ethnic group). The Yena figures are linked to the cult of yam. They are placed above a large pile of tubers during the first ceremony (there are 3 in all) organized at harvest time, and which aims to thank the ancestors for this sacred gift and ensure a good harvest the following year. The Yena figures symbolize the planting period and evoke the digging stick used when transplanting the yam plant into the ground. Very dense wood with a very beautiful patina of use.
