Jean Dufy was born in 1888 in Le Havre, the seventh of a family of eleven children. Raoul's younger brother, he trained in painting with the support and encouragement of his brother. Initially attracted by Matisse and the Fauves, briefly tempted by Cézanne and Cubism, the artist developed, following his brother's example, a body of work marked by colour and the joy of living. Ports and regattas, open windows, bridle paths and paddocks are some of the common themes in their works. After his military obligations (1910-1912), he settled in Paris where he met, among others, Derain, Braque, Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire. His first watercolours were exhibited at the Berthe Weill gallery in 1914. The artist continued to paint during his mobilisation for the Great War. For a long time, he created decorations for Maison Haviland, a porcelain manufacturer in Limoges. After the war, Jean Dufy regularly participated in the Salon d'Automne (between 1920 and 1932) and in group exhibitions. Solo exhibitions showed his work (Paris, New York, etc.). Jean helped Raoul create his famous fresco in praise of electricity for the 1937 International Exhibition. The last decade of his life was devoted to travel, mainly in Europe and North Africa. Jean Dufy died in 1964. His work is part of the collections of prestigious museums, such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Moma in New York.
