Orientalism - Monge Jules - French Colonial Soldier In Algeria - Gouache - Signed

Gouache on paper by Jules Monge, a painter specializing in military subjects. A soldier, a Franch colonial soldier, is painted in profile. He clasps his hands in front of him. The smoke from his cigarette creates an interesting light halo around his face.
The uniform is rendered with precision. The subject is located ( Blidah, Algerie) above the painter's signature, lower right.
The work probably dates from the beginning of the 20th century, before the First World War.
The work is in excellent condition, without foxing. It is presented under glass, in a sober modern metal frame.

The artist
Jules Monge was born in Marseille in 1855, he died in Paris in 1934. Jules Monge studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, where he was a student of Alexandre Cabanel. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in Paris from 1881 to 1933 and had many successes there. An academy officer, he specialized in military subjects, especially before the First World War. Between the two wars, he went to China and drew many scenes of daily life there.

Several French museums hold the works of Jules Monge: Musée des Armées and Musée d'Orsay in Paris, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Besançon, Musée Cantini in Marseille, Musée Bossuet in Meaux, Musée d'art in Toulon.
The works of Jules Monge have also been the subject of numerous public sales.
