"Aymar Alexandre Pezant (1846-1916)."
Beautiful painting by Aymar Alexandre PEZANT (1846-1916). The work: A well-known French painter of the 19th century, his fame was built around his realist work. A painter primarily of animals, his paintings are essentially devoted to the motif of the cow. Although he painted other subjects, this theme was very important to his master Félix de Vuillefroy-Cassini and takes on its full meaning in the political context of the Third Republic. Indeed, the young republic, concerned with stability, encouraged this "local" painting, exalting the feeling of national cohesion and sustainability. The period 1870-1890 was then the time of blossoming of a painting devoted to Bovines where the most famous actors alongside Vuillefroy were Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899), Julien Dupré (1851-1910), Émile van Marcke (1827-1890) or even André Cortés y Aguilar (1812-1879) and Léon Barillot (1844-1929). Other painters like Aymar Pézant but also Adolphe Marais (1856-1940), Marie Diéterle (1856-1935) and Edouard Michel Ferdinand Hamman (1854-1952) made bovines their favorite subject following their ancestors.
