"Polychrome Statue Sculpture - St Roch In Carved Wood - 18th Century Curiosity Reliquary"
Saint Roch in polychrome carved wood, 18th century

Charming polychrome sculpture from the 18th century, worked in the round, representing Saint Roch, patron of the medical professions and earth workers... This piece is distinguished by its expressiveness and the relic of the saint inserted in the back.

Description :
Saint Roch is represented standing, dressed in his traditional pilgrim's clothing including hat, cape, boots and gourd. Leaning on his pilgrim's staff (or staff), he reveals his legs and on the right leg appears the plague bubo, pointed out. The saint is accompanied by his faithful dog, holding a piece of bread in its mouth, emblem of the legend according to which he was fed by this animal during his isolation in the woods.
Placed on a base, harmoniously highlighting the whole.

Legend and symbolism:
Saint Roch, suffering from the plague, retreated into the forest to avoid contaminating others. A faithful dog brought him bread daily, while an angel watched over him. He is venerated as protector of the sick and invoked against epidemics.
The pilgrim's staff, called a "bumblebee", is a symbol of support and protection, used to defend oneself and advance on the path of penance.

Dimensions:
                      Height: 35 cm
                      Width: 11 cm
                      Depth: 10.5 cm

Origin: France, 18th century period

Our wink:
The bumblebee, mentioned in the Cortex Calixtinus, symbolizes hope and perseverance, recalling the role of the pilgrim in the face of trials. Equipped with a iron end, it is both support and weapon, embodying the duality between spiritual protection and material defense. This sculpture beautifully illustrates the message of faith and resilience linked to Saint Roch.

This sculpture will appeal to discerning collectors, perfect for integrating a collection of sacred art or to enhance a refined interior.
This Saint Roch will bring a touch of timeless elegance, imbued with spirituality and history.
