Pair of Meiji period Kyoto Satsuma vases by Nishida Workshop with raised enamel and gilt decoration, Japan c. 1890
An impressive and richly decorated pair of antique earthenware Satsuma vases, crafted in Kyoto during the Meiji period (late 19th century) by the esteemed Nishida Workshop. These vases are exemplary of Kyoto Satsuma ware, created for export and characterised by their detailed painting, luxurious gilding, and narrative compositions.
Each vase is hand-painted with complex scenes featuring elegantly robed figures — possibly monks, sages, or aristocrats — placed within traditional Japanese landscapes and decorative surrounds. The reverse side of each vase depicts additional figures, some with golden halos, suggesting representations of deities or legendary sages. These figures are surrounded by elaborate backgrounds and enriched with floral and geometric patterns in gold.
Both vases feature zoomorphic handles shaped like animal heads, adding a sculptural element to the form. The applied raised enamel, especially on the garments, halos, and floral motifs, showcases the classic Kyoto Satsuma technique — using gilded dots and textured details to create a three-dimensional, tactile surface.
The vivid polychrome palette, extensive use of gold, and painstaking attention to fine detail reflect the high level of craftsmanship associated with Nishida. The bases of the vases are signed with the characters 西田造 (Nishida-zō, “Made by Nishida”) and 大日本 (Dai Nippon, “Great Japan”), affirming both origin and export intent. Pieces marked by Nishida Workshop have appeared at major international auctions, including Christie’s.
These vases are a testament to the skill and artistic ambition of Meiji-era ceramic artists, and they remain highly collectible among connoisseurs of Japanese export porcelain.
