We Read The Newspaper While Drinking Coffee In The Garden Oil on canvas, 131x163cm Signed Edelmann 1967 Born in Paris of Alsatian origin, Jean Edelmann, a self-taught artist, began his artistic career in unusual circumstances: taken prisoner during the Second World War, he developed his talent for drawing during his five years of captivity. Upon his return in 1945, he devoted himself to painting, engraving and illustration. Inhabited by his art, Edelmann explores a rich and poetic palette, playing on patterns and series. His works, unique in the artistic landscape of the 20th century, reflect a constant search for balance between color and composition. He also expresses himself through other media such as stained glass (Saint-Julien church in Caen) or tapestry. From 1952, he exhibited in Paris, notably at the Cardo, Messine and Art International galleries, as well as in the provinces and abroad. His work, recognized by Philippe Dagen, has been the subject of a dedicated book (Jean Edelmann, 1950-1985, ed. Galerie d'Art International, 1986). Each of his creations is an invitation to discover a universe where poetry and mastery of color intertwine with elegance and modernity.
