TRIBAL ARTS-AFRICAN ARTS-SCULPTURE DAN MASK IVORY COAST WEST AFRICA CARVED WOOD CIRCA 1930-1950 Dan mask from Ivory Coast, called racing, gunyé gé. The Dan previously had a tradition of organizing races in the different villages, the aim of which was to train young men for combat. The winner won a mask, which he kept, as long as no other competitor beat him. Expression marked by gentleness for this mask with the characteristic features of representations of Dan masks: high and rounded forehead, round eyes, thin and pinched nose, sensual mouth, fine features in general.
