South China, early 20th century, very pretty statue of a polychrome wooden horse depicted in a typical posture of the Tang period (618-907). It is depicted standing, with its right hind leg raised. It has its typical harness of this period. The horses highly appreciated by the Chinese Tang Court were also those they used for heavy work.
